we sit down with the man most responsible for passing the president's agenda, senate leader harry reid, the gatekeeper only on "this week." >>> plus, all the week's politics and super bowl predictions on our powerhouse roundtable with nobel prize winning economist paul krugman of "the new york times" and ceo carly fiorina and jorge ramos of univision, lou barletta and abc's matthew dowd. >>> hello again. president obama says that our headliner has the toughest job in washington. top republicans claim he makes it harder than he needs to be and no single senator will have more influence over the president's agenda than harry reid who we met for this exclusive interview. he was feisty and confident. especially on this week's top issue, immigration reform. >> it has to get done. we have to work hard to get it done. it's really easy to write principles, to write legislation, much harder and once we write the legislation we have to get it passed but i think things are looking really good. looking good for a number of reason, the right thing to do and number two, the republicans can no longer

let's move on to harry reid because harry reid has been asked about gun patrol. control. he has been asked by george stephanopoulos. and here's what he had to say about it. >> would you vote for it? >> i didn't vote for the assault weapons last time because it didn't make sense but i'll take a look at it. >> now here is the important thing to remember about harry reid. he's facing a little bit of a conundrum because there is what is good for the country and what his constituents in nevada wants. and of course in nevada they're very much pro gun. and he is very much pro gun himself. it is very unlikely that he's well to support an assault weapons ban. but he was also talking about background checks. let's hear what he said about that. >> everyone acknowledged that we should have universal background checks. i support the second amendment but you can do things like that. >> michael, what are your thoughts. do you think harry reid will take the lead on gun control? >> i don't think he'll take the lead, but he's the smartest politician out there. i don't have any problems say

i mean, isn't this harry reid's fault? harry had a chance to change the rules of the senate and he was too nice to mitch mcconnell and now look what we've got. there's probably more to come. your thoughts. >> i suppose so, though i remember not very long ago when we were all suffering under the george w. bush administration and there was a real fear that without the filibuster then george bush would have been able to put some of his very radical extremists on the bench and push through more of his agenda. so i understand the reticence to kind of unleash the nuclear option. and you know, i don't think you can necessarily blame harry reid for the unprecedented not just obstructionism but kind of paranoid lunacy of this new crop of senators who, you know, before i think we used to see this sort of incredibly paranoid mccarthyite apocalyptic view of american foreign policy among some of the characters in the house -- >> doesn't that make the case for why harry should have done, this because of the ted cruzes of the world and t

harry reid said it over the weekend. you know that was coordinated. probably wrecked the stock market. that worries me. will the republicans absolutely oppose it? that's the question. >> i think they will. i think boehner has a different view on the realities of negotiating with obama than he did before. it's like lucy with the football. you think you have taken care of the revenue piece. not going to raise revenues through loophole raisings and restructuring. now they're back. there is no amount of tax increase. it will be carbon taxes, vat taxes. there is an unlimited appetite for increased revenue, not achieved the way you and i would like to achieve increased revenue by growing the pie, doubling the salaries of everybody and increasing revenue that way. they do it through games of rate increases and closed loopholes without the necessary underlying tax reform. >> they have a rate increase and closing loopholes. the idea was rate cuts. they didn't really forget it. >> any more than he forgot jobs in his inaugural address. >> what i see in the same

harry reid had a chance to go for a more full-throated filibuster. but his reasoning was that when the democrats are in the majority -- in the minority and that could happen, this next election, that they want to have that same leverage that republicans have been using with this filibuster reform to block many of the president's actions. but this is a real surprise that hagel has essentially been filibusterd. it looks like ult mimately, he will be confirmed. they have been pretty successful in forcing the president's hand to release more information on that. but, ultimately, i think they are giving away some of their standing. they're supposed to be the party of national security, the party of defense in this way by blocking this very important post. i think they're doing some damage -- >> yeah, we're talking about secretary of defense. we're talking about who's going to head the pentagon. and let me tell you this, ryan, tell you how blatantly inconsistent and unprecedented this is. he said in 2005 that presidential nominees shouldn't be filibustered
